Mountain Building

There are five different types of mountains: Domed, Folded, Fault Block, Volcanic, and Plateau Mountains. We'll begin by talking about how each are created along with explanations as well as examples.

Domed Mountains
  • Are the result of great amount of melted rock which is pushing it's way up under the earth.
  • There is usually little to none folding or faulting.
  • Example: Black Hills, South Dakota

Folded Mountains
  • Are formed when two plates collide head on
  • Edges also collide with one another
  • Resembles an accoridan
  • Examples: Himalays, Applachians, Alps, Andes, and Urals
Fault Block Mountains
  • Formed when faults or cracks in the earth's crust force materials or blocks of rock up and push others down.
  • There are no folds but fractures, usually looks like blocks or that they are stacked
  • Examples: Sierra Nevada, East African Basin

Volcanic Mountains
  • Formed when molten rock erupts and piles upon the surface
  • This can occur on land or in the ocean
  • Examples: Cascade Range, Mid-Ocean Ridges, Hawaii

Plateau Mountains
  • These are flat topped rocks that have been lifted high above the crust by converging continental plates
  • "High levels" of flat land
  • Examples: Colorado Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau
